I am planning to implement a VIO server, and my company uses several monitoring agents.

Is it a good idea to install these monitoring agents on the VIO server? Will IBM still support the VIO server, with these monitoring agents installed? What software do you guys usually install on these servers?

TIA

I believe IBM only support the use of third party device drivers on the VIO server. Although it is AIX under the covers it should not be treated as an AIX machine. The oem_setup_env command to get to AIX root is ONLY intended for installing things like EMC disk drivers, etc.
If you do muck about with it IBM are likely to say remove any third party software or even scratch install the server and see if the problem remains before they will work a problem on it.

I wouldn't recommend installing monitoring tools on the VIO server(s). I'm pretty sure you won't be "supported" if an issue comes up and they determine you're running the tools. As DUKESSD said, device drivers are pretty much the only "ok" thing to install.

openssh is allowed too AFAIK, so you could run vmstat, iostat, ... remotely I would assume. Other than that - don't touch!

do you have documentation regarding this? I would like to show a co-worker about this, before she starts installing things on this.

TIA

openssh comes preinstalled with 1.3.0.0 vio.

I also have nmon on my vio servers.
