Hardware of the RAID Disk
==========================
6 SL Hot-swap U320 HDD bays : Max Support Internal 440.4 GB
Integrated ServeRAID 6i+ with 128M Cache + Ultra320 Controller
4 x 73.4GB 10K rpm Ultra320 SCSI HDD

The RAID disk was configured as RAID 5 plus one hot spare. One hard disk was defunct (Now only RAID 5). Just wondering if I replace the faulty disk with a new one (exact model), will the RAID disk rebuild itself automatically to be "RAID 5 + hotspare".
Or I need to use IBM Server RAID Manager to rebuild it?
It is because I do not want to shutdown the server.

Note: The OS is Linux FC4.

Thanks in advance!

Why would you need to shutdown the server? It depends on how the serveraid card is configured. if autorebuild is turned on, it will do the rebuild when it sees the new drive, if not, you will see no activity. Remember to wait 30 seconds after pulling drive before putting the new drive in so the raid card can mark it as missing, then when new drive is installed it will take a minute or so to add it. Either way, if you serve raid manager installed, you can go to the raid adapter, and see what is happening. If it is not rebuilding, you can just add the new disk as the hot spare, no reboot or power down is required.

Thanks for your advice. I don't want to shutdown the server. And I have no idea if autorebuild is turned on.
The server raid manager is not installed on Linux Fedora Core 4 - it is pretty an old OS. I will try to replace the hard disk without shutting down the server based on the advice as the above. Thanks again.
