do you actually get that message just from trying to connect or does it happen when you issue startup(/shutdown)? if it happend when you connect is the instance running or are you trying to start it up?

I'm not an AIX expert (supported Oracle on it but never installed) but on Solaris & Linux there are kernel settings (shared memory & semaphores; in /etc/system on Solaris) which must be set during install so it's possible that's your problem but again I have NO idea how to configure/allocate shared memory on AIX.

Do you have an SGA which is over 2GB in size? I see a few references in Metalink that this could be your problem. You could try reducing the size of the SGA by reducing the memory allocated to the shared pool and/or db buffer cache.

Personally, I would contact Oracle's customer support with this issue. They probably have a better handle on the possible options than anyone in this forum.

The unable to attach is usually because you are not running the "oracle" executable as the "oracle" user. The permissions on the "oracle" executable must have the "sticky" bit set (chmod 7555 oracle - in $ORACLE_HOME/bin).
