I was given an IBM 6000 powerserver 590. Is it worth keeping? I need a simple file server and would like to use this. I can get the thing plugged and turned on but can't seeem to get past that. I have a linksys router for connection. Does any one know about these older servers?

Hi,
I don't remember that server,
but is it a microchannel machine? ( has the key in front ?)

I have not understood if it has the console and what
happens when you give power.

If it hangs in some mode, turn the key im managemet mode
(tool position) before you power on it, and see what appens.

Has it cdrom ? Network adapter ? Have you another risc ?

bye.

Key in front, yes, but see no microchannel reference. It has a terminal a few characters on top FDX NUM 1- 1 and curser, but no input is possible. CD rom yes, adaptor and plugged in.

Key to service and turned on gives a code in the display of 570.
I can get to a terminal set up, set to 9600 baud. But can't get further.

I see no CDs here but there is a floppy or AIX 4.14 ISA/PCI Updates. How could I tell if the machine has AIX on it or if it's been removed and if I need to get a new one?

Hi Bob,

to see what is on the disk, you have to
boot the machine with key in normal position.
I know, you machine halts before:
570 code refers to scsi configuration.

The service position is used to install or go in maintenance
mode, or if system is OK, to run dignostic; diagnostic
starts automatically whit the key in serv. pos. if OS is ok.

Even if there is an OS in your system, and you don't know
his history, root password, oslevel, ecc., is difficult
to manage a system without CD media.

Probably you can find disgnitic floppies (5-10): whit
these you can test the hardware, it is no easy for beginners
and does not anything about OS.

For you, is easier try to install a fresh copy of OS,
rather than manage a system whit a strange story.

I suggest to get any version of AIX: 4.1.X or 4.2.X or 4.3.X: trying to install a new installation, is a sure
mode to test HW. Don't buy AIX now: find a CD ( for now
is sufficent CD #1).

If found, put key in service mode, insert CD and boot:
if nothing happens, your HW is not OK even terminal
but whitout it you cannot continue.

When you are at installation point, continue sending
a post to this thread.

good luck.
