This is a netvista with ME. Unit shuts down as if power failure and restarts at various intervals. Subbed power supply, added extra cooling. Problems seems to get worse with time. That is the longer it is on the shorter the interval between shutdown. Seems to be affected by various changes in load. If I access a CD or HD it shutsdown everytime I try it. If I access desktop items like My Computer etc it often works for awhile. I notice some hot caps and some swelled caps on motherboard but I have been fooled by them before. Any advice will be appreciated.

Normally i would suspect any of these:

virus\trojan\malware of some sort - do a free online scan at, say, trend-micro. they will catch things your av wont!

Failing power supply. You can test the various rails if you have a multimeter, you can google a tutorial on how to do the testing, or see techrepublic.com, they have one.

Overheating cpu. Remove, clean dirt, dust, thermal glue or pad, install new thermal grease and re-install cpu and heatsink. Leave side of case off and have a table fan blowing on the cpu, in addition to the cpu fan. This is just for testing purposes. Someone may come on and say it may be better for the case to be closed, i dont believe that, but you can if you wish. Either way, its only for a test, see if your computer stops rebooting.

Hardware or software causing this- rite click my computer\properties\advanced\startup & recovery\settings and uncheck where it says system failure\auto restart.

The swelled caps are bad, it is a known issue with certain netvista boards, contact IBM at 1-800-IBM-SERV. the EC ends on 6/30.

Thanks for the advice.

I have taken the covers off and added a 110 cfm fan blowing directly on the cpu. I have a min/max multimeter on the power supply and can see it dip when the restart occurs. There are at least 8 swelled caps on this board and there is one near the power supply connection that is swelled and too hot to touch. I will test the ESR of these caps and replace them. I will also clean up the heatsink as well.

Thanks again.

I forgot to give you this website when i posted above.

If you have swelled caps you sure want to contact IBM.
