I have got an IBM P55a in my data centre which has hung and I need to instruct one of our windows guys to reset it. Is it just a case of pressing the white power off button on the front panel, wait a couple of mins and press it again?
you could do it by yourself from HMC if your 55A is configured in HMC.
if not, you can ask them to connect HMC1 or HMC2 port to the other system network interface (eg. on laptop ot unused one on the other AIX system) and configure there address from the proper network like described below in url and then you would be able to access ASMI - of course if you know password and the IP of HMC1 or HMC2 are the default (factory) ones. If they are static you should ask windows guys to read the static IP from control panel of 55A (change menu #2 change to manual and then read the IPs from menu #30) and then configure IP on interface on the system where HMC1or2 port is atached to be in the same network.
So, havign the connection via browser from ASMI you can do restart of your box.
as described in docu, and ASMI stops to work just after static IP is set... (IP is changes properly, can connect to HMC using static IP, but ASMI doesn't work even after complete halt/power off and then power on the box)
Youd could also use console port - for accessing text service menu - for that you'll need serial cable to the other AIX system and eg. kermit to access your 55A (the speed must be set to 19200).
