I need help trouble shooting this system. Could not find exact problem on any other IBM forum. I have a Netvista desktop that was working fine. It had 2 PS/2 ext cables for the kboard and mouse.

Mouse connection came undone and user re-attached. Hard drive now keeps clicking and won't boot. I replace with new drive, installed XP, reboot, it now comes up after POST whether I want to boot via safe mode, last known or normally each time.

Does anyone have any suggestion on what might be causing this problem? Motherboard?

That's what happens when you press F8 during boot. Make sure your keyboard is good, try another.

Look in your Boot.ini file. Right-click My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery->Settings then "To edit startup options files manually, click Edit" click Edit. What do you see? Should be something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

or the like. Copy & paste yours here for analysis.

It seems if i boot without a mouse it boots normal. If I place a PS/2 or USB mouse it gives me the F8 screen, reboots itself (loops).

I waited till it got to the desktop before putting in the USB mouse.

Now that is strange! Any clues in Device Manager or Event log? You could try and remove the mouse in device mangler (uninstall) and reboot, let Windows detect and install...

It seems Windows is seeing something it does not like when it sees the mouse at hardware detect. Are there any mouse programs installed (Intellimouse, Logitech etc)? Remove them.

Very curious. Someone here will nail it down!
