hi,
i have an ibm thinkpad a21m that was put together (mobo, hd, ram, cd, floppy, etc.). installed xp. worked fine. it had "unknown device" on device manager. i used msinfo32 to identify that it needed acpi (advanced configuration power interface). i installed it. the unknown device error went away. when i restarted the system, it keeps going into hybernation after 2-3 minutes. i unplugged cmos and main battery. reset hybernation option to never, reset all the bios to default. still goes into hybernation. my question is: would it go into hybernation if the cpu gets hot? or is there another problem that i'm overlooking?
thanks.

check bios and cmos for settings...once the acpi was loaded it may have adjusted some settings there

We're doing this stuff for the wealth and fame right?

i checked the bios. all seems to disable hibernation and "sleep". but when i took the battery out, and turned it on, it seems that it's not doing that anymore. but after the pc has been on for almost 20-30 minutes, it freezes. could it be that the cpu is getting hot? would it do that when the cpu gets hot?
thanks.

Absolutely. You might need to re-seat the CPU heatsink or clean out the fan. Are there any errors in the Event Log that might help pin down the problem?

Check the BIOS for a CPU temp monitor, if present then boot into BIOS after a crash and see if the CPU is hot. If the option's not in BIOS, use one of the available monitoring tools like SpeedFan or

Did the hibernation problem start before or after you installed the ACPI driver? If it started after I'd double check to make sure that the driver you installed was the correct one. To get the driver, go to IBM's (Lenovo's?) website and download the driver for the chipset; or alternatively you can go directly to the chipset manufacturer's website and download the latest driver from them. Since ACPI controls the power options of a PC I wouldn't be surprised that an incorrect driver would give you this behavior.
