IBM H-50 upgrade hard disks

I have an IBM-H50 with 2 4.5gig internal disk drives that i am trying to replace with 9gig drives. When I put a single 9gig drive in and boot the system it goes thru the boot process, but before it gets to the point where i can hit F5 to pull up the menu, the system shuts down pauses for a couple of seconds and boots again. I have the latest microcode for the system loaded so I don't think it is an inablility for the system to recongize the size of the disk.
The new drives are not IBM but I've done the same thing in an older IBM-S990 with 18gig drives and it worked just fine.

Any ideas?
