I am having an issue with ibm director, I am tying to manage about 300 Servers with it, i installed the agent on 10, but i can not get it to discover any of them, but it does pick up 4 dell desktops running snmp. Can anyone help?

What type of servers are they?

Are they on the same physical subnet as the director server?

Do they have any type of advanced systems management cards installed and networked?

Have you enabled director to auto add unknown agents that contact the server. Director will not add them unless you enable this option. Agents will only be added to the console if you hard set them up. This option is available in discovery preferences. I am not positive about this but pretty sure.

They are ibm X series Servers, they are on the same subnet, they do not have networked managemnet adapters, i did tell it to auto add unknown agents, but it seems as if there is no communication between the sever and the clients.

we also have a concord e-health server running, i an not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Obvious questions then because i dont think a concord e-health server has anything to do with it. Can you ping these servers from the director server. Have you verified that all of directors services and each agents director agent service is running.

ALso, try on one of the machines if possible to cable up t6he management port. Hopefully you are running DHCP so it can get an ip address and run discover again.

all services are running, i have been able to ping the servers from the director server.i will get one of the management adapters cabled and try it that way, if that works i am going to need a hell of alot of cable!

thanks for your help, i will reply with the results, it is also a good thing that i finally got my hands on the documentation.

Another thing, please tell me when you installed the agent you enabled the network cards in the network card section. If not, then not director talky-talky. There is a command you can run to check this. Got to try to figure it out though.

sorry i keep posting so many different times. The command to check if the network card is enabled on a agent is "TWGIPCCF". this should bring up a gui. Select enable all if you have only one NIC in the server, or obviously enable only the NIC with the IP address as the same network segment as the director server.

i am glad you are responding, i was just running that command on the director server and on a box that is not seen, it was set to all adapters enabled.

In the readbook I posted earlier, search for "Genevent". It is in section 6.3.6 Troubleshooting the IBM Director Agent Installation. Ok, I will leave you to play now.

where u able to access the web page on the agent from the director server?

i haven't tried to access the web page yet, it is next on the list. just downloaded the readbook pdf.

I WILL BEAT THIS THING YET!

Stiddy, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, i have it working, but i have rub into a new problem with it. it has totally fragged a few of my servers, bad enough to do a full system restore, but such is life, at leat we got to try out our disaster recovery methods.

being that it has killed the serves i don't know if this product is going to be the one that we finally use.

just an fyi, the servers it killed were 1 sql 1 oracle and a box with a brooktrout card for the esker fax server.

Thats OK, See
thread513-1018065
in this forum. I have had the same problem. I am still working on the correct method to upgrade or even to install version 4.20. I recently downloaded 4.21, but that is only an upgrade to 4.20 which I am having a hard time to get to install on my hardware platforms. I know all of this sounds like a product that you said earlier you may not end up using. I am not yet given up on it. I am happy with a lot of its features and the fact that I can have the director agents send events into Tivoli TEC or NetVIEW and create actions from there. Post some of your specific hardware, software environments. I mean RAID level, BIOS level, firmware, etc.....I you would like me to try to help further. Who knows, maybe we can help solve both of our problems....I will post my hardware stuff on Monday..

HTH - Stiddy
