Hi all, I've got a bit of a problem with my AS/400 710. We are about to upgrade the OS to V5R1 and was told by IBM to upgrade the Client Access Software on the PC we use as a terminal. The client install went fine but after rebooting the client can no longer see the COM1 port to connect to the 400. We've made 2 calls to IBM and they have no idea. Without the PC able to connect, the 400 won't boot, it keeps system dumping after 5 minutes. Any suggestions??

Thanks.

My only suggestion is to thoroughly go through your options in the Client Access program to make sure you didn't miss anything.

Since you're using the COM1 port, can you connect to anything else that requires a serial port connection? Like a UPS or router to test out it is sending and receiving?

Is there another way to connect, say, a dumb terminal to the system as the controller terminal? This has always been my saving grace, considering that we still have some clients on Twinax, and the rest on TCP/IP. J.R. Juiliano

I hope you've solved this by now but some ideas are:

Make sure you have the psudo modem setup done correctly

At A600 4031 the AS/400 is aquireing the console, do a make new connection at this time and choose let Client Access detect the com port. (Don't choose it)

Try doing a manual IPL to DST, check that the console type hasn't been changed. (This is a rare problem, but sometimes the bit gets corupted...understand it's been frustrating Rochester for some time).

I know IBM is trying to get us to go to the Operations Console, but for the reasons you stated, I'm sticking with the old twinax console. You can probably get a used dirty console for next to nothing, but they ALWAYS work!!

Been on the 400 since the beginning. Great server, but sometimes us old Green Screeners know best!!

I agree.

We're using half dumb terminals and half 3477 terminal emulation software on TCP/IP. The dummies are a maintenance no-brainer.

Still have my dumb terminal hooked up to port 0,0 on my twinax line and wouldn't give it up for anything when configuring my 400.

Then again, for regular stuff I'm still running the emulation software because it's prettier! :) J.R. Juiliano
