IBM 7337 Medium Changer

I have been trying to get my IBM 7337 Medium Changer to work with no success. I have loaded the Atape device driver, but I
can not access the Autochanger. The special device file smc* is supposed to be created, but it is not. I would like to be able to control the changing of tapes via software commands. Does anyone have this device configured and working properly?
Any kind of help would be appreciated.
