IBM 701CS Thinkpad...Serial Port conflict?

I am trying to hook up a serial connectioon to a card reader for my laptop. Under Device Manager, it says that the conflicts are the Modem (i don't use it) and the infra red controller (i don't use it either). Can I disable these so I can use my com port1 ? I am running Windows 98.
