IBM 4683-A01

I am new to IT and am talking courses for it at my tech. college and I am wonering if an IBM 4683 can be connected to a home computer and just 1 register and where I can buy software for it? The Register was purchased used, Anyone know of any vendors of cable or are the 4694 cables compatible with the IBM 4683/4684?

I have the 4694's at work and they are connected to our LAN via standard ethernet cables. I don't know about the 4683 but I found some info on the web that said they were pretty old.
