There's no tip, i just wanted to be first to be in this area, sometimes I like being selfish!!!

I will be monitoring this new one, if you need help anyone.
I am happy to help anyone, I am also on the linux server as well.
Well I'll be third! I have Linux SuSe 6.2 installed and will shortly configure it as a home server. I'm planning to have Linux running as a server, use Windows98 as a client and will TRY to get an old PS2/70 (MCA) running as a Linux router to get on the NET. So, I'll definitely have a few questions, soon.
And I'll be more than happy to share my Linux skills with anyone although they are limited. But boy, is Linux fun (it never works the first time...I must be masochist! ;-)at learning how your OS works.

Cheers and welcome to the revolution or EVOLUTION ?

Vanpat, good luck with the MCA box ;^) You thinking of having it connected to the net full time? If so, I'd do some homework on security issues, etc, and make sure you're fully patched up with the latest security fixes, etc. Nothing some script kiddy vandal with a fist full of programs and well known security holes likes more than a permanently on Linux box

Let us all know if you've got queries, although the "Linux (Server)" forum may be more appropriate for some of the questions.

BTW, I'd go for "Evolution", what with survival of the fittest and all that

WHY WHY OH WHY are you going to use win98 as client for the internet??? When you have linux on other machines? It's far easyer to keep all your machines on one operating system, for you can then admin all machines from each other. And have roaming profiles so when you go to anyone of them your own settings are loaded (sort of).

Hating Win98 / 95 / NT / oh no 2000, not again!

Do you think win2K will have any 2000 bugs in!!!!!
Simon Jones
sijones@talk21.com
<a href=
well, darn it! Me and my Linux for Dummies book'll be fifth! (along with my 8-10 Linux distros including: RH5.2 & 6.0; SuSE; Caldera 2.2; FreeBSD 2.2.0 & 2.2.4; etc. etc. etc.)
what are you talking about above?

and is it directed to me??
Simon Jones
sijones@talk21.com
<a href=
Actually; I'm really only talking to whoever feels like listening (prob. nobody ((refer to 1st & 2nd posts))

I was also letting whomever cares know that I have such & such Linux distribs. on CD; if someone w/in the Tek-Tips community wants them, I can give them a duplicate at cost.
As far as the linux for Dummies book; well....you guessed it, I had just gotten home from a trip to Staples; being the impatient person I am I decided to buy the book rather than trying to find my own way at the bash prompt.
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. read the BIG problem with X on linux server forum and you'll see my problem.
Simon Jones
sijones@talk21.com
<a href=
Hello AndyBo, about the Linux(Server) forum, I have not seen one yet in TekTips or I must be blind... As for the MCA router, I know I'll have "fun" with it...I don't even have a reference diskette and it turns out that the HD capacity is 120 MB !!! And no, it will not be connected at all times on the NET, just as a dial out server for my client(s). Thanks for the encouragement, I'll need it!
Sijones, the only reason I still use a Windows client is because I have not yet configured all the plugins for my Linux Netscape. I find it a real hassle and ther's not much documentation on it or I just don't get it... I'm still hanging in there and long for the day I will get rid of Windows for good. I hate to admit this to you guys, but IE5 is alot better than Netscape for Linux which hangs most of the time (on my system, anyways).
On another note, I find that I cannot get the best out of my Matrox Mystique 220 with Linux's X server. On Windows, I have the Matrox QuickDesk which allows me to change the gamma range to override my monitor settings. On Linux, I find that most of the graphics are just too dark...BTW, is there any tool that would allow me to do the same on Linux ??? That would really help!

Thanks for your insight. Long live Linux !
Pat
As far as I am aware you shouldn't have to cofigure plugins for netscape, just drop them in the plugins directory and as long as there in the search path it should load them fine.

This advice above is though my own experince, as I have droped the plugin for shockwave in the plugins and it worked fine.
Simon Jones
sijones@talk21.com
<a href=

The Linux(server) forum is located in the "Software -- MIS -- Operating Systems/UNIX based area" and is intended for those running Linux as a server. The posts in this forum are intended for those running Linux as a standalone desktop.

This recommendation to split the forums was made by a number of people in the Linux community. We just did what they asked for.

Questions about this (or any other forums you would like to see added) can be directed to support@tek-tips.com
Good luck!
Which Window Manager are you using? (i.e. KDE; WindowMaker; GNOME; etc.)
If we know this; we can all go home, mess around configureing Window Managers on our "Toy Box" Linux boxes; then let you know what we come up with
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. I am currently using KDE on SuSe 6.2. But what I am asking is probably impossible to get since I'm talking about the Matrox driver for Windows. Since they were reluctant to make any drivers public until the G line came out, I doubt that I'll have any luck. Unless, there is more configuration needed but where ??? Thanks for your asking, though.
I did just what the doc directed. Dropped the plugger.so in the plugins directory. This plugin is supposed to open various file formats (AVIs, MPEGs...). Perhaps, you use this plugin or have one to recommend? As for Netscape 4.7, I'll give it a try.

Thanks
Did it work? If it didn't then get the plugin for shockwave and see how they load there's, it has a installer with it but I am sure that you drop it in the plugins dir?

This should give you a idea on how the plugins are loaded, and help you load the other one that your talking about, as for reccommeding one, sorry don't know any.
Simon Jones
sijones@talk21.com
<a href=
