I have a new computer with a Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm hard drive with Windows XP. I want to take my old hard drive, an IBM DESKSTAR 7200rpm 20.5 GB with W ME, and transfer all the data on there to my new hard drive. I tried W XP files and data transfer wizard, but it is set up to link to computers. How do I install the old hard drive as a slave to the new computer, and get the files from it out to the new hard drive. I did plug iot in as a aslave, but even though it powered up, the hard drive was not accessible.

Did you set the jumpers correctly?
You could try it temporarily on the other IDE connector (which your CD/DVD drive(s) are connected to) as a master.
I've seen a number of posts where XP has a problem reading a drive formatted by another operating system (even though its a format XP can access like FAT32).

I take it you don't have network cards in these PCs?

You could try a parallel cable connection (via the printer ports on both machines) - see

I will try the DVD suggestion. I dont have network cards.
Can I put this harddrive in another computer, my roomates with W ME and then just transfer via cables. I didnt want to mess his up though.

If you can't get yours to read it, then yes you could slave it to your roomates and use a parallel cable (be aware though that parallel cable connection is very slow - if you're talking lots of data it will take hours. There are apps like laplink which can speed this up by using compression - but generally cost).

PS. Is the old drive being recognised in the bios? You have set the bios to auto for the connection the drive is on (eg, it may be set to 'none' by default - so bios will then ignore it). Also, if it is recognised, and XP doesn't see it first time you boot, shutdown (not reset) and boot up again.

Okay, Iwill try the BIOS , thanks. I only booted it once.

Why don't you keep the 20 gig as your system drive and just use the new drive for data? A+,N+,S+,L+,I+,CST,CFOT,CCNT,ACSP,ISA CCST3

I am not that literate with computers. I just need to get the data from one drive to the next as easy as possible. Thanks, Steve

Drive2Drive is designed to make upgrading to a new hard disk faster and easier than ever. Running entirely from within the Windows environment, the Drive2Drive wizard lets you copy an entire hard disk or an individual drive or partition to another hard disk--all without losing a single user preference or byte of data. Drive2Drive also features plug-and-play detection of new hard disks to guide you when you add your new hard disk. Version 2.0 now has a new, easier-to-use interface, as well as enhanced functionality and increased performance.
Note: The trial edition of Drive2Drive is fully functional except that it does not permit you to resize drives (partitions). The cost to register is $24.95.

Try this.

or this...

Hard Drive Upgrader simplifies the process of upgrading to a new hard drive by duplicating the entire contents of your existing drive to the new one. The program does not require you to fdisk or format the new hard drive. Instead, it creates partitions as necessary and moves your OS and program files intact. Even your drive letters stay the same. This demo version allows you to duplicate to a hard drive of the same size only; the registered version allows duplication to a smaller or larger drive, and features partition resizing. Read the "user.txt" file for usage instructions.

I dont want to transfer the Operating system, just the dat in the files, ie MP3, woed, excels files, pictures etc etc. I will try to use the DVD/CD method, cause I really want to do it from my computer, within my computer.
