I want to make a formula field an axis on my chart

I can't seem to get a field I created as a formula to become an axis on my chart. It appears in my report, but when I try to choose it in the data section of chart expert the > is grayed out. (crystal 8)

I'm using the following formula to create the field. It appears correctly on my report, but isn't available to my chart.
