Hello, I want to learn windows 2000/ 2003 server could someone help please I have not start reading any material yet what will I need to need for new b. I want to and must have this skill added to my skills to be more maketable

I agree with 58sniper, read books. If you can not afford them then go to Microsofts website and do the research you need. Try going back to school like I did in 2004 to get where I am today.

thanks for your reply dberg35. your work title is what I would like to have. I went back to school and got a bachelors in IT. I would like to learn more Microsoft skills to move up and also into a more management role. any help will do will I need a lab. most of the jobs I see require you to have some microsoft skills, I am not getting that skill on the job so I want to self trian myself. As for certs I have A+, NET+, CCNA, but never did any server related study so much help is needed. Thanks

If you dont mind studying for a year or 2 part time i should do the msca or even better the mcse. I'm working throught he exams at the moment and you will learn a lot.

You can also work while you're doing them so you're still gaining experience which i think is the most important thing.

What you can do is buy yourself a half decent computer with plenty of RAM, download the free versions of VMware or MS Virtual Server. From there you can download trial versions of all MS products that you can play with. MS even provides virtual hard disk images of most of their application environments.
The best way to learn is a combination of hands-on, reading and when you're stumped of course... contact your peers on forums such as this.
Hope this helps.

I agree with itsp1965, 5 years ago i graduated from Uni with a business degree, was tight for money so ended up in a simple Windows support job, was tedious. Started to learn on my own, building servers, messing about with things, reading forums such as this and have now progressed to the managager of the windows infastructure team. Even now im stil trying to learn on my own as much as i can.

Getting "into the trenches" is by far the best way to learn it. Books are good for learning theory, best practices, and features that you'll rarely see. A good start.

But if you never see the stuff in action, it's much harder.

Go here: . You'll have to register (free) but then you can download their free CBT samples, one of which is a full CD on Windows Server 2003. It'll give you a great start.
