I want to install the SMS client to different departments in stages, i.e sales, marketing, shipping, etc.

I do not want install it remotely because there may be machines outside the department within the specified subnet.

I really don't want to install it manually due to the number of machines requiring the client.

Now, if I enable remote logon will the smsls.bat file be added to all users in the domain?

If so, is manual installs my best option?

Thanks,

Paranoid

Do use Kixtart logon scripts? If so, this task will be pretty easy for you. ( NT based scripting language...very popular...its included on the resource kit. But updates the core script files all the time..compatible with 2K)

You can enable logon but make sure you DONT check off "modify everyones profile with the smsls.bat"...unless you want to rollout SMS to entire company at once (assuming that everyone runs logon scripts).

I would create a Kixtart script (This is how I rolled out SMS to 2000 clients.) You can say, IF user is in Global Group X, run the SMSLS.BAT...or something like: If machine is in SUBNET X and in Global Group X, run the SMSLS.bat...everyone else will not run the script.

The advantage of Kixtart is that you can use LOGIC in the scripts...the logic is built into the kixtart script language. Its very easy to implement and write scripts for.

Jpoandl,

Thanks for the quick and elaborate response. I will definitely look into Kixtart.

I don't use Kixtart, but depending on the number of accounts you have you could make a second logon script for the users you want to install the client on and just call smsls.
"call \\myserver\netlogon\smsls.bat"

It works for us.
