I think I may have a virus. (DOH) 3

I opened a dodgy e-mail subject "carsonovic" which contained two attachments (one of which was a htm file). There was nothing in the main body of the e-mail at all and when i opened the htm file a weird picture of something like a hotmail inbox appeared.
Since them my computer has been slow. When I check the task manager performance tab I noticed that the CPU Usage is continually rising to 100% when I am doing nothing on the computer and then falling away again giving a series of peaks and troughs on the chart.
I tried to install PC-Cillin anti virus program without success and I have also reinstalled windows (2kpro) but failed to solve the problem.
I have no experience of viruses so I am not 100% sure that I have a virus but if anyone recognises the signs I would appreciate any help.

Some viruses have the ability to block loading of antivirus software.

James maybe right. Try downloading Symantec's stand-alone Klez cleaner.

It was klez as well as another virus PE ELKERN D or something like that. I used the online virus checker at

http://www.housecall.antivirus.com

and also downloaded programs to remove both viruses.

I had never bothered with virus protection software before, preferring to trust my instincts with emails 'n' stuff but I think I'll invest now.
