I sure hope someone can help me with this. Some how, the password to the 6509 has changed / or been changed. the first password (telnet works) but the enabel password appears to have been changed.
How can I work around this and regain access with out redoing the configuration? I thank you for any help.

-James

If you happen to know the RW SNMP string is, you can download the config and change it.. then reload it through SNMP.

There is a faq in the cisco routers forum that will show you how to recover the password for an Cisco switch/router using SNMP.
It will be available in this forum shortly.

Cheers
Phil. If everything is coming your way then you're in the wrong lane.

Will, I thought we had it under control. Last night, armed with tips for this web site and the information found on Cisco's web site. I arrived at the switch closet a 9:30pm.

A little shake, but I open hyper terminal and connected to the 6509 and took a quick review of my instructions. Powered the switch down for about ten seconds. Repowered the switch and began to glue my self to the monitor.

Yes, it looks just like I was told and boy! it is moving, I did not think I quick enough to catch the " The Cisco System Console" at the exact time. I was not, and I reboot 4 times and then i got smart, I timed it and began to punch the Enter key and sure enough there it is" "enter password",

I type enter and I get the (enable)so I type: set enablepass, enter and I get: enter old password ***********
enter new pasword************, confirm new password***********. I stopped and call my co-worker, woke him up, and asked him to help confirm that we has won the match.

Well, he said if you can enter a command? I think you have gotten it.

so I entered this: set port speed 7/11 10 (enter) sure enough the swith reacted and there was this information rolling across the screen...port 7/11 has joined the brigde.

Well, I added the duplex and went home. I got an email from that co-worker this morning....call me> I knew then that something did not work last night. He can't get into the 6509?????????????????????? Help!

It may sound daft - but have you let him know the new password? If everything is coming your way then you're in the wrong lane.

Of course I told him the new password. But, that is just the problem, we can't access the switch with the new or any other password.

Thank all of you for your help. I will let you know how we come out. We will over come this problem.

Dont forget.. your password is case-sensitive on the 6509. If you cap'ed the first letter.. you need to do that way all the time.

Just a SWAG ;-)

First, you must try to print the config of the switch (use tips found on CISCo's site).
If the password is type 7 encrypted then you can decode it using (copy/paste the encrypted password).

Also try a search on Internet wtith "Password" and "CISCO" to find tips.

You guys do know that there is a console password (serially connected) AND a VTY password (telnet) right?
