I am the webmaster for the Rockwell Insitute optimizing our site for targeted keyword phrases like "washington real estate schools" - Yesterday I thought I would check to see how we are doing for the keywords/phrases I usually check for. In the past we werent doing too well until I made some changes and did other things.... when I checked yesterday we actually made page 1!!! everyone was so excited.. but my boss - when check the phrase mentioned above gets us on page 5.. How is that possible. I can understand Google having a million servers and maybe she picked on that hasnt index our site or something but page 5? - I have checked all day yesterday and at home even... I still get page 1 and my officemate does too - why is my boss getting page 5?

Google use a number of different datacentres that service the millions of search requests that are carried out every day. Which datacentre services your request depends on a number of factors including your geographic location and the load on the datacentres at that point in time.

You can see which datacentre you are using by hovering your cursor over the 'cached' links on the results page. You will see an IP address in the URL. You will probably find that this IP is different on the various PCs you use that get different results.

The different results are also due to the fact that these datacentres are not synchronised in realtime - it can take days to update them due to the sheer amount of information that they have to cope with.
