OK now I think I have a problem. Looking at the platter there is two perfect dark circles. I think they are scratches but they look so perfectly made. Does a platter ever, ever, ever have a circle on it much less two.

You have a problem if you can see the platter. Unless you are in a dust-free environment such as a laminar-flow cabinet with micro filtered air, the drive enclosure will trap particles when reclosed. These particles will whip around the enclosure when the disk spins at several thousand RPM. The particles will eventually be attracted to the platter surfaces or heads, and will cause scratches, dropouts and bad sectors, which will grow.

You know, I would liken hard drive platter transplant surgery to something like a non-doctor doing a medical procedure on someone. Ill-advised, but not illegal and certainly dangerous.

But, if you're having fun - go for it.

I think your initial diagnosis of "Circles" fits the symptoms perfectly Dr Milkbar.

They are pretty perfect but that is merely an artefact caused by the platter's high angular velocity, and microscopic head dimensions, plus a very accurate electro-servo mechanism trying to read and re-read the damaged tracks.

Under an electron microscope, I am sure that they would appear to be deep and jagged incisions.

The patient is indeed dead, and ready for suitable interment or recycling. (I like the transparent body bag, by the way.)
