I receive this error .....i/o error on write (): permission denied (error 13)..... when performing a write to tape device xStp1 either with tar or cpio. I can write the same files to floppy without the error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you get this running as root?

What are the permissions of the device you are using?

I am logged in as root. The tape device permissions are: crw-rw-rw, group=sys, owner=sys.

I have tried a travan ide tape drive, travan scsi tape drive and now a seagate scsi tape drive. The existing scsi controller is a Adaptec 2940. Both existing scsi controller and scsi tape drive work in another SCO Unix 5.0.5 server.

I am coming in behind someone who did not have any Unix experience. I have no idea what they may have done.

The o/s is SCO Open Server 5.0.5., licensed and registered with Caldera.

Could this be something silly like the tape cartridge
itself has the "write protect" tab set on?

I have tried several tapes for both tape drives. None of the tapes have the write protect tab enabled.

Why xStp1 ?? You should use rStp1 or nrStp1 !
