I/O device error in BU Exec

I'm using BackupExec 9.0 (rev 4454), the tape device is a HP StorageWorks DAT 40 (using the BUExec drivers).

Every backup attempt ends with failure and the error code 45d (I/O device error).

Sometimes this happens on the backup job, sometimes on the verify - but it happens every time.

I'm going to upgrade to 9.1, but wondered if there is anything else that could be causing the problem.

Any info appreciated, TIA.

Ian Ritchie.

Hi,

It could be just about anything. I would look at the following items:

1. Tape drive defect
2. Communcation problem
3. Intermittent/bad cable
4. Improper termination
5. Controller or controller speed setting.

Veritas has a utility that you can download to test test all thses things. I don't remember what it's called but it shouldn't be to difficult to find it on thier site.

I agree with Lou

Check for Event ID 9, 11, 15 in the System Log

Also Update Firmware on Tape Device/SCSI Card and drivers.
Lower the Transfer rate on the SCSI and see what happens.
Us NT backup to test results. This will require running tapeinst.exe to remove vertias drivers, enabling RSM.

We have 21 sites with a media server at each site backing up between 5 and 7 servers per site and have seen this a lot since upgrading from 8.6 to 9.0 then 9.0 to 9.1.
One thing that seems to have helped is to enable multi LUN on the SCSI card. The SCSI card then sees 2 devices as both the tape drive and the autoloader parts have seperate LUN ID's, we have also lowered the speed to 40MBPS as this is the theoretical maximum busrt speed for out sutoloaders (Sony SDX 500C). Still have some issues but these measures did show some improvement.

Thanks for the replies, I've just done the upgrade so will see what happens tonight. Looks like there's plenty of other stuff to try too.
