Why didn't it start? Were you getting a boot failure or NO OPERATING SYSTEM or what?
You say you formatted the DOS partition. Did you have to allocate it first? What did FDISK say?
It sounds like there may be a problem with the partition table on the drive. By formatting first you may have overwritten necessary information for the Novell partition. It would have been preferable to boot from floppy first.
Does FDISK see an unknown partition on the drive corresponding to the Novell SYS? If you were able to run VREPAIR I guess you loaded SERVER OK. Are you sure you have the right disk driver loaded? Is it SCSI or IDE? Are you using the current drivers, IDE.DSK for example must be recent or it may be unable to properly interpret the disk parameters, which will make it unable to see SYS partition.
You can try loading INSTALL and see if it can interpret the partition table OK. DO NOT REALLOCATE THE SYS PARTITION, that will destroy everything, but you can use it to see if it at least sees a Novell partition on the drive.
If the drive is dying there is a good chance the Novell partition(s) may be lost. In that case I hope you have backups.
