I do not know what your box is and I have never seen your flavour of Unix or the software you are running, however it is good practice to reboot your system on a regular basis as I have seen this sort of probem happen often.
Most Unix sites tend to reboot at least once a week unless they have the machines, o/s, and software that is capable of running efficently for longer periods. There may be sites that never reboot but in 20 years the longest I have seen between regular reboots is 1 month.
Ged Jones
gedejones@hotmail.com

Hiya James :)

Without knowing anything about the application, it's not easy to say "Do this, run that, do the other, and everything will be OK".

If this is happening every few days, then, as Ged says, it would probably be a good idea to manually reboot the server each evening at close of business.

Alternatively, you could put an entry into crontab to reboot the server every night.

To do this, log in as "root".

Set "EDITOR" environment variable to be "vi".

EDITOR=vi
export EDITOR

Edit the crontab:

crontab -e

Enter a new line into the crontab that looks like the following:

0 5 * * * /usr/sbin/shutdown -y -g0 -i6

This will reboot the server every morning at 5am. You may need to check the path to the shutdown command on your server. (This might work: still logged in as "root", enter type shutdown. You should get a response along the lines of "shutdown is /usr/sbin/shutdown".)

Hope this helps.

--
Hmmm, output from uptime on my HPUX box is

4:34pm up 147 days, 13:54, 9 users, load average: 0.32, 0.37, 0.75

AIX box is 167 days.

If you're having to reboot I think you might have a problem. It does, I agree, seem to be the immediate solution for this thread.

Mike
michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com
<a href= Cargill's Corporate Web Site
