Hello everyone. This is my first time here. I have a problem that I hope someone here may be able to help me with.

Im trying to add a CAT5 jack to my living room so that I can run a wired connection to my laptop when I use it out there. I normally use wireless, but I keep getting dropped signals so I would prefer to use wired.

Well, I went to the store today and bought a wall plate that has a built in CAT5 jack. This didnt come with an installation diagram so I have no idea as to which cable goes where.

When I strip a CAT5 cable there are 4 sets of colors. Blue, Orange, Brown and Green. Each colored wire has a corresponding striped wire for it, just like all CAT5 cables. Ive connected stripped CAT5 cables to CAT5 jacks before, but there were not already in a wall plate. No stores locally had those in stock, so I went with one that is already in a wall plate.

Well, on the back of the CAT5 jack, there are eight sections(as their should be) with a wire screwed into each. This is where the problem is. There are eight solid wires rather then 4 solid with a corresponding striped wire. Can anyone help me by telling me where each wire should go?

Heres what the back of the CAT5 in the wall plate looks like.

If anyone can help me I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thank you and happy new year.

Your jack is NOT a cat 5 jack, but rather it is one designed for telephone applications. Not all 8-pin modular jacks are "cat 5" It may still work - but way non-standard. To answer your question, let's wire as 568B.

Your cable jack color
wh/bl green
bl/wh red
wh/or Blue
or/wh orange
wh/gn black
gn/wh yellow
wh/bn brown
bn/wh white

Thank you Mike. I wasnt aware that this was designed for telephone applications. Im going to try it with the wire arrangement you said and hopefully it works. Thanks again.

The jack should work but you may experiance a slower connection than a proper CAT5 jack.

Ok, there is something that im not understanding with the directions that were given to me.

On the left column is my my cable.

So the first line says wh/bl which im taking means white/blue.
the second line says bl/wh which im taking as meaning blue/white. The first two lines would be the same cable then. There is a blue/white and a blue only. Which do I use? This goes the same for all the colors listed.

Look at the 1st column. It lists the individual conductors of your Cat-5 cable.

Look at the 2nd column. It lists the colors of the wires on the screw terminals of your Cat-0 jack.

The White Wire with the Blue Stripe of your Cat-5 cable connects to the screw terminal with the Green wire on your jack, etc., etc.

Similarily, the White Wire with the Orange Stripe of your Cat-5 cable connects to the screw terminal with the Blue wire on your jack, and the Brown Wire with the White Sripe of your Cat-5 cable connects to the screw terminal with the White wire on your jack.

Sorry for my ignorance, but this is where im getting messed up. I have a white whire with a blue stripe, but no blue whire with a white stripe. The other blue wire I have is a solid one. Same with all the other colors. One is colored with a white stripe and one is solid. Im not sure where the solid ones go.

The white with a Blue stripe is WH/BL the the solid blue would be BL/WH. and the same for all the other colors.

great. Thanks. Thats what I wanted to make sure. Now on to trying this.

I just wanted to come back and tell you all thank you. I got it working. Best thing about it, there is no loss of speed. Im getting exactly what I get on my wired desktop, 3015kbps down and 222kpbs up. My cable internet is bad with uploads, but atleast its what im used to. Thanks again for all the help and I hope you all have a good one.
