Hi guys. I need some feedback please. I'm looking at a product called AutoDBA. It's a Database Management tool that has similar features to other products in the marketi.e. reporting, drill-down capabilities, notification and tuning. It also has a feature called Auto-Solve that will allow automation to discover and repair problems such as storage and extent management, chaining and object rebuilds as well as analyzing the data. Once a problem is discovered, PL/SQL scripts are generated and can be automatically executed or I can implement them myself.

What I'd like to know is what if any experiences you've had with these type of tools and what your general feelings are.

Thanks in advance for your time !

Hi Safranek

Well my experience is that these tools work if you as a DBA do not have an overview of your databases.

The problem with these tools are, that they are general tools - they do not know anything about the code running, time-frame of schedule jobs, large batch-jobs, the capacity of your server and so on. These tools only reacts if something is about to happen or during problems - you can't estimate that “today we have 2000 concurrent users what happens if we start-up a large invoice batch-job? - How is performance and resources on the server? - do we have resource to handle immediate batch-jobs? – Do we have resource to include a new module?”

It is my experiences that if you really want control over your server then you need to understand at lot of your applications to be able to calculate these important issues.

Generally I think these tools are great – but I can’t answer management before an action – I can only make statistics and report after the action – so instead I like to use tools like StatsPack and wait events to monitor these actions, because I understand more then I am close to key issues.
