I need help using databases in visual basic 6

Could somebody help me with something

I am trying to make a piece of software which uses a database to check if cars need MOT's Or Tax discs to be renewed

I am new to database programming in visual basic and would like some help with it

What i need to know is how can i read an expiry date on the database and get the program to remind me 1 week before to renew the Tax or MOT

I would be very greatful if somebody helped as this project is importan to the place that i work
