Whoever can give me explicit directions would be greatly appreciated. My friend installed Windows XP SP3 on his system (upgraded Win 2000), and blew away a few of his hw drivers. Both his dvd-rom and CDRW need drivers reinstalled, but he doesn't have disks.

I was able to identify his cdrw as AOpen CRW5232/AAO PRO and downloaded firmware rel 1.04. The problem I am having is that the file is zipped, and once unzipped gives me a screen which asks to identify drive, but does not allow. I can't find the temp file it says that it unzipped, and am not sure how to proceed from here.

Thanks for the help,
John

Optical Drives such as CD-RW's and DVD players should not require any additional drivers.

What makes you think they need any drivers?

For the CDwriter any burning software such as Roxio should be enough.

For the DVD probably a software player such as cyberlink Power DVD or WinDVD should suffice if only to get the codecs.

Thank you, I'm not sure... it's just that neither drive (E: and F:) shows up when displaying drives through my computer -- and when you go to hardware, the drives show the yellow circle with black question mark and the phrase about the drive not working correctly comes up... I'm not near it to give you the exact message.

Both should show up as CD (at the least) if everything is working OK. The additional stuff would be to take the basic detected units to their full capabilities.

How about an error message about your secondary IDE controller? That is the usual problem. Without the proper pathway to read the drive they won't set up correctly.

That's the problem.... neither one shows up ... all he sees are his A: and his C: and two other drives I: and J: which read 'removable disk'.

Did he move anything when he installed XP? Disconnect the drives maybe and then plug them back in?

If so maybe something is not plugged in right.

You could also try to remove the drives from Device Manager and let windows re-discover them.

I think I may just remove the drives from the device manager and see if windows will rediscover them. I did download and reinstall drivers for his ethernet card, since that was also wiped out.

What about the "I" and "J". It is quite possible that those are the opticals that are being identified incorrectly.
You could also plug one of them onto the primary controller and see if it is properly identified there.

My previous comment about the secondary IDE channel being a possible problem can be best explained by a google search for "missing CD drives"

also see if this is of help, as I am assuming that the upper and lower filters took a dive...

Thank you all...

BadBigBen -- you were right, the upper and lower filters took a dive. I googled missing drives to get the proper registry key to fix.

I have it up and running again (happy friend, lol).

Thanks again,
John

jts1465 - glad to hear that your friend is a happy camper... and thanks for following up with the thread...
