I need help connecting a IR modem to VB app.

I need to send at command to a modem on an IR link to the computer without having to download software to manage the conncetion. I wanna write the managing software to do that.
(this might be a very stupid Question but I tried using the MSCOMM control to send AT commands to the Com port on which the IR modem is connected but get no return codes from the modem)
