First off thank you for taking the time to look at my post. You’re help is greatly appreciated. Let me begin by telling you what exactly I want to do. I want to have a wired/wireless network for my home use and have a separate wireless network for friends, family and my pda. The reason for the separate wireless is I do not want to have to put other people’s computers on my network and my pda does not support 128-bit encryption. This way I can use 64-bit encryption for my PDA and other peoples computers, and still have my laptops, Xbox, Playstation 2, Tivo connecting securely with 128 bit encryption on the “home” network. I do not want the "guest" network to connect to my home network. I want it totally separate. All I want to do is give the guest network access to the Internet. My current configuration is:
Westell 2100 DSL Modem as my gateway to the Internet using 192.168.1.254
Netgear 8 port switch connecting the Westell to my three desktop computers, print server, and Netgear WG602 Wireless Access Point all using static IP addresses from 192.168.1.89 – 192.168.1.100.
The Netgear Wireless Access Point connects to my two laptops and to a Netgear WGE111 Game adapter that connects to a Netgear 5 port switch, which in turn connects my Xbox, Playstation 2, and Tivo to my network. All falling in the 192.168.1.89 – 192.168.1.100 range.
I just got my hands on a Cisco PIX 501 and a Netopia Cayman 3347W. I was thinking about eliminating the Westell and using the Netopia as my DSL modem and for my “guest” wireless network since it has 802.11b built in. The Netopia also has 4 Ethernet ports on the back of the unit. I will use one of the ports to connect the PIX for Internet access and the other 3 ports for guest computers that don’t have wireless. How would I configure both of my networks so that they are completely separate? DHCP? Static? I want to make sure my “home” network is secure. I plan on turning off SSID broadcast, using 128-bit encryption and only allowing the MAC addresses of the wireless adaptors on my laptops and game adapter to connect to the Netgear WAP. If someone breaks the 64bit encryption on the Netopia built in wireless adaptor all they will see is a PDA if its on and the will have to go through the PIX firewall to get to the rest of my network. Does this make sense? Please tell me how to configure this dream network of mine and if I have missed anything. Oh I do know if this makes a difference but I have Bellsouth DSL Extreme that comes with a Static IP so I can use a server and do game and web hosting, which I am considering to do.
Thanks
