I need a machine to recover data from a hard disk drive with a faulty media card/platter motor. The motor does not spin. The platter is still in tact with the data.

You could try to shake the platter loose if it has an inertia problem spinning up. Rotate the drive in the direction of platter spin with one hand and stop it suddenly with the heel of the other hand. Then try power up again.

If that fails, it is time for a data recovery company. Do a google search for "data recovery". Be prepared to spend big money.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

You may have an electronics issue. One problem is that the controller board on the drive may be faulty. You might have a chance of recovering the data if you get an identical drive (in all respects - including firmware) and swapped over the controllers.

If you are in Australia and you cannot find the right drive, or you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself, you might like to go to They either have the drives in stock or look for them for you.
They do not sell the drives but if they have them, they change the boards and copy the data for you for a small cost. It costs nothing if the data is not copied.
