I'm trying to solve a Healthcare-system trouble ticket that depends on building a comprehensive pick list of recognized gender choices, and I don't have access presently to a healthcare subject-matter expert. I posed this need in another forum, and a participant there suggested I post my need here.

When I was developing systems years ago, we programmatically had to accommodate at least the following classifications (which are the only ones I remember):
[ul][li]Female[/li]
[li]Male[/li]
[li]Male becoming Female[/li]
[li]Female becoming Male[/li]
[li]Male (born Female)[/li]
[li]Female (born male)[/li]
[li]...plus other categories[/li]
[/ul]

I've Googled, I've been to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services website (which lists only 'M' and 'F')...Does anyone have a suggesion of either a link or a more comprehensive list?

Thanks,

First source I would use is the ASC X12 Standard which is recognized by HHS and used the following codes:

A - Not Provided
B - Not Applicable
F - Female
M - Male
N - Non-sexed (meaning not known because not recorded or not part of protocol)
U - Unknown
X - Unsexable (unable to determine)

I was on a BI project that supported an expanded gender list which that was composed of the groupings you have only worded different

Female Formerly Male
Male Formerly Female

We also had
Other and Unknown

Mufasa,

I know that this is an old thread but I just came across this. For transgendered persons - intersex.

Cheers.

Thanks for posting, CMeagan.

My investigation has distilled down to the notion that recording gender comes down to context: How does the notion of gender relate to (or affect) the application?
