We are currently running Windows 2003 Small Business Server and have 4 machines networked running XP Pro. One evening we had a bad thunderstorm which created a power surge. Ever since that night, we have lost our intranet. The message we receive is Database server not running. Please check connections and try again. I need some help to get this back up. I am familiar with some aspects of the Server management but the intranet is not one of them. Can someone give me some well needed advice? Thanks!

Are all other aspects of the server working? File shares, email, etc...

Are all the services running, especially the IIS service?

Everyting else seems to be working fine. Everyone receives their mail and file sharing is good. Can you explain the IIS service so I check to see if that is working? Thanks!

On the server, right click on My Computer, then Manage. Drill down to Services and Apps, then services. Make sure the IIS Admin Service and the World Wide Web Publishing services are both running.

If they are, go to the Internet Information Service area on the left, drill down to Web Sites and right click on your Intranet web site. Make sure it is running... ie, make sure there is not an option that says START.

The first area I had you check is the overall encompassing services for your Internet/Intranet sites ins IIS (Internet Information Services). The 2nd area is how to manage different sites on your server.

Thanks for the great instructions. I checked everything you mentioned and everything is running. What should be my next step?

1) What happens when you go to from one of the XP clients in Internet Explorer?

2) Maybe your SQL services are not running, which is the built in Database in SBS2003. Go back to services and check the MSSQLSERVER service and the SQLSERVERAGENT service.
