I know there are a lot of question in the DNS section about how to set up forwarding but I am trying to figure out why my forwarding properties is greyed out. Can someone help? I installed DNS when running dcpromo. Should I have not done it then?

You probably have not deleted the . zone. That's a period, this designates you as a Root server and is there by default when you install DNS. If you delete this and refresh, your forwarders will be able to be enabled...
HTH!

Thanks,
