Cox Cable suggested we go to the LINKSYS Modem in lieu of their Toshiba Modem so I did two days ago. For two years, I was never dropped from the internet with the old modem, now everytime I go to check my mail I see that I am offline. What gives? All I did was remove theirs and install mine after giving them the address. It works great when it is online. Is there a setting that I need to set manually with this new modem?
It is a Linksys BEFCMU10 ver 2.0 Modem.
By the way I never installed either their software or the new software in this process and according to Cox I don't need to.
Thanks

Do you use Outlook Express? If so, go into the Outlook Express Tools menu, select Options... and then, when the dialogue box has opened, click on the Connection tab.

Make sure the 'Hang up after sending and receiving' checkbox is NOT checked.

Outlook has a setting with the same function except that the tab is called 'Mail Delivery' instead of 'Connection'.

Hope that fixes the problem.

Thanks for the response. I'm OK on that setting, either it is something else...or I wonder if my new modem has an intermittant problem?
This morning it was still connected when I got up and read your response. We will have to wait and see if it happens again.

that setting was for dail-up anyway, but good idea!

no, you don't need the software if you have a ethernet card and not USB.

if your internet is working fine but you have those problems with outlook. go to Tools>accounts>mail tab> and make sure that next to your email account it says "any availible" under "connection" if not click "properties" and then the connection tab and fix it there.

it looks like the email account is looking for the wrong connection or something like that. (IF YOUR INTERNET IS WORKING AT THAT TIME)

hope it helps. let us know if you need any more help. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Thanks for the response. I'm OK on that setting as well (any available). I no sooner sent the message that I had not been dropped and after returning to my computer I had the message again that I was offline.
Getting back on is easy but annoying since I listen for incoming emails.

what do you do to resolve it? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

check your network properties and see what adaptors you have install and paste them in a post please. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

right-click "my network places" on your desktop and click properties. let me know what is in your components list. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

i'm sorry. right-click on "local area connection" and click properties. the compnents are listed there. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

go to control panel>internet options>connections tab> make sure "never dail a connection" is selected. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

hold on it may be a little simpler than i thought. in outlook go to tools>options> general tab and make sure the settings are correct there. ie. check for new messages every ?? minutes and connect at this time..... "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

so, could you even change the setting if you wanted to. you said the whole page is greyed out? (in internet options) "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

That window was found when I you had me go to this place.

"go to control panel>internet options>connections tab> make sure "never dail a connection" is selected"

This above window is where you had me go to "in outlook go to tools>options> general tab"

I have it set for 15 minutes and have selected.
"Connect even when working offline"

these are different places.
sorry for the confusion, I'm just glad this isn't serious.
Thanks again for you diligence.

I missed your message above and we got out of synch I think.
This is what I have when I right click on local area connection:

Client for microsoft networks
SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

File and printsharing for microsoft networks

Internet protocol
obtain an IP address automatically
