At first I would get an error in ossproxy and my computer wouldn't shut down. Now I'm getting warning that in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OSSPROXY.EXE I have HEURISTIC/BACKDOOR.GENERIC. So, can I delete it and how.

I keep getting an error in system\ossproxy.exe can I delete it.

It certainly sounds like a virus. I suggest that you run an AntiVirus scan before doing anything else.

You don't need ossproxy..
To remove in Windows 9x/ME, do "Start \ Run" and type "C:\Windows\System\NSCheck /uninstall".
To remove in Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003 do "Start \ Run" and type NSCheck /uninstall.
As for HEURISTIC/BACKDOOR.GENERIC, it is a backdoor worm that usually propogates through p2p file sharing programs (software pirating)..
Your av should have caught and cleaned it if you kept it up to date..
