I hope this is the correct thread!

Strange problem (or strange to me anyway) MS IE6 can access MSN's home page and its contents but not google.co.uk or youtube or anything googlish.

Wireless connection to BT Infinity Broadband on a Compaq computer using a Netgear 111 wireless dongle. It says it's connected and indeed it must be to get the MSN home page. If it were not getting any page at all, I would investigate an Internet connection problem. Only SP2 installed - would that make a difference? This is a favour for a friend who is in a poor financial position and cannot replace an aging PC - otherwise I'd have it crushed!

I have tried checking the box under security for "TLS 1.1" as I note that google uses https connections - whereas MSN home page does not.

Thanks to anyone who can figure this out! I doff my cap to you sir or madam!

Youtube no longer supports IE6 so the best you can hope for is the error page stating as much.

Google however should load. Do you get any error? Or just a blank page?

Beyond that, have you tried with a different browser?

At this point in time, I can't imagine WHY you are trying to run A) such an outdated operating system and B) an outdated browser. Switch to Firefox or Chrome just so you have a more modern/safe browser regardless of if you continue to run XP.

IE can't be updated enough to be "current" on XP so dump it.

Dear goombawaho

"This is a favour for a friend who is in a poor financial position and cannot replace an aging PC - otherwise I'd have it crushed!" is the key to answering this question for you. ;-)

Still, moving on to a modern browser like Chrome or Firefox is what needs to happen as more sites will move farther away from older browsers like I.E.6.

Firefox or Opera look like the only option - you can't get Chrome for XP anymore. Google stopped issuing Chrome for XP and Vista in the middle of last year.

You can still get IE8 which is the latest IE browser that works on XP but that can't handle HTML5.
You can get Opera from

Thanks to all esp edfair. That looked like what I was needing but sadly it didn't work. I tried other browsers but none would install. It was simply a mystery why some web sites worked and others didn't.

I have handed the PC back telling him the bad news.

Thank you again.

A couple of suggestions for your friend to try:

Try the problem sites with the firewall off.

From the command prompt, try a ping to the site.
From the command prompt, try a tracert to the site.

All as an attempt to split the problem out as network or browser.

Understand that there are strong suggestions to get off XP and IE. Some still are comfortable using both.
You might be able to find a Chrome installer via google search Version 49 is what I use although there is almost a continuous warning that it is no longer supported.

With the price of refurbished Windows 7 PCs, even poorer people can afford a more modern O.S. Running windows xp is like heading down a narrowing river in a canoe. At some point you'll be grounded and have to walk.

Installing a lightweight Linux distro will allow you to continue using the hardware and best of all it's free.
I know that isn't the solution for everybody but if all they're doing is browsing then that's the cheapest solution.

Edit: I just realized that I didn't really answer your original question, just provided an alternative.
- IE 6 doesn't have HTML5 support
- Some security certificates aren't compatible with the browser
- Lots of websites (Facebook for example) have checks in place to prevent older browsers from being used
Could be any of the above.

Yeah, Linux Mint will run as quickly and be more secure than XP but most people want Windoze.
