I was wondering if there is a way to run a website from my computer. I am sick of these webservers (geocities, etc) and my ISP is horrible. I was just wonering if this is possible to run a website server from my computer. I have tried to install PHP software and having trouble. Any other suggestions. Please help..thanks

Yes, it's very much possible. I think most developers are running a small webserver on their computers these days. Not knowing your OS, I would suggest downloading Apache, PHP and MySQL, as these are easy to install on most OSs. //Daniel

I am running WinXP and also I have a router setup so I think that may have been an issue when I setup the software previously. I would love to anything setup. Are there any other suggestions besides PHP?

A router shouldn't cause that much problems. Just setup port redirecting and redirect port 80 to your computer running the server software.

What exactly do you mean? Do you want additional modules or what? //Daniel

The reason I ask if there is any other way to run a website from my computer is because I have no clue how PHP works or mySQL. I am looking for something easy and not PHP. How can someone access the html file that are setup on my computer? If i can figure that out I will be ok. Thanks again

That is what Apache does. PHP is a scripting language that executes on the server and generates dynamic documents. If you just install Apache, you would be able to put your HTML documents in a directory and then when someone types in your IP in a browser, it would show those files. To download Apache, go to //Daniel

I have apache set up to my computer and I tried the test and I was able to see the start up file. Now what in the world do I do to start the website?

Hi mate,

In the Apache directory, there is a directory called HTDOCS, this is where you put your files.

BUT, if you are asking these questions, then I would highly advise you to read up about Apache before you deploy your server to the internet, otherwise you may open a huge security hole on your machine without your knowledge.

Hope this helps Wullie
