Having installed mandrake 8.1 as a second os against WinME I cannot get the modem in use, if I click connect then it says
modem ready, modem intializing, and then stays like that for as long as I would leave it.
I have tried removing the modem, resetting it on my comm port ttyS3 which is comm port 4 on my windows
If I try asking it to locate minicom, it says it is not present
Other than networking it with my apple, which is in a different room and downstairs to boot, I am at a loss, anyone had this problem and fixed it.
The modem works on the windows set up ie I can dial out on it
but all my internet programs are corrupted and I need to do a virus check[ I was running NAv 2001] online, to see if that caused the knock out problem.
hope I have made things clear
regards

You may want to try wvdial or KPPP (for kde). wvdial will find the correct modem and proceed to set up dialing for it. If there's no working modem on your system, it will find it.

The other choice is to use KPPP and to query every serial prot on /dev/ (/dev/ttySX) . You should get a response from the correct modem.

Cousd this be a Winmodem? (but mentioning jumpers makes mek think not) Please let Tek-Tips members know if their posts were helpful.

Hi krale. I did use kppp and I think I went through every port shown.but I will give your suggestion a try as the only recourse i have is to network it to my apple which lives in a different room and downstairs so would involve either wireless or a long cable.
I will get back to you if this is successful.
thanks

Hi Krale. could you give me exact instructions for using/finding wvdial I am not at all familiar with Linux. or Unix except I just bought an iMac. so my son was taking me through it all step by step. but he is 5 hours behind me so getting together is a bit of a problem. if you have IM i could use that. with ICQ, AOL or Yahoo but obviously only if you are available .

HI again, I have internet accessibility now on my Windows ME however I would like the back up of having a linux connection too.
I have tried all the suggestions but I am at a loss to know what else to do. Without being able to dial up through lmy MAndrake 8.1 I fail to see how I can get the drivers for it, unless [idea] I can download them into windows or my imac then burn to cd and use them that way?
Anyone any idea if this will work/
Thanks

truly, I've never dealt with this kind of problem. I have ISA modems, a PCTEL onboard modem (which amazingly works with Linux). I also have a serial port 33.6 kbps external. None exhibit this behavior, nor have I heard of it.

I've dealt with problems and can give ideas how to get the modem to work with Linux... But I'm truly at a loss here.

If you have found Linux drivers and download them into Linux, you can put the Windows file system on a directory in Linux. It's called mounting.

log in as root, and
mkdir /mnt/windows (makes directory)
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

That binds your drive to /mnt/windows. Make sure to change the drive to what your system is. If windows is on the first hard drive but 2'nd partition, it's /dev/hda2 . The second harddrive, partition 1 would be /dev/hdb1 . Do you get that?

Sorry I cant be much help... It's justa strange problem I've never dealt with. Please let Tek-Tips members know if their posts were helpful.
