I have four swiches that are not manufactured by the same company. I want to monitor network traffic on all of the switches whilst only being connected to one port on one switch.
How do I do this? DO I need any software installed so that I can manage my switches in this way?

You should find out if these switches will do SNMP. If they do, then you will have to study up on it and then you can monitor their bandwidth usage, CPU Utilization, etc.
