I have an old Compaq Proliant server running SCO Openserver that will not boot. It apparently crashed overnight. When I boot, it tells me there is a dump in the /swap. I tell it not to save the image, and to proceed with checking the root file system. At this point, I get a panic, it dumps a bunch of pages, then goes to the power-off prompt.
Should I try booting unix.old?
My other problem is: (like I need another one)
I don't know what version of Openserver the machine is running. Is there a way to find out after booting from a floppy - I have a 5.0.4 boot disk handy.
Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.

If you can mount up the /stand filesystem from the beleaguered host you could try.

[tt]# strings /stand/unix | grep '5\.0'
5.0.5
5.0.5
3.2v5.0.5
#[/tt]

Obviously using the mounted location of /stand instead.

I'm not sure if there's a more obvious way...

Annihilannic.

what is the panic message?

If you can get the hd mounted after booting from floppy (if it knows how to talk to the hd controller) you can look to see what directory exists under /var/opt/K/SCO/Unix.

Most likely you are looking at a hardware problem but that will depend on the panic message and if it is, you probably won't be able to boot from the floppy either.
