one is 7200 rpm one is 5400 rpm what should i do

Nothing! The 7200 will just be a tad faster than the 5400. The drive speeds work independantly. If they are both bare, put the operating system on the faster one.

Micker377 has given you good advice. But age and size could also be a factor. You may want to reconsider if the 7200 spin drive is 10 gigs and 5 yrs old and the 5400 spin drive is 60 gigs and newer.
Still, micker377 has given you good advice as the faster drive is likely to be the newer drive as well, just not 100% for sure in every case, there could be other factors.

no the 7200 rpm is 80 gig and the 5400 is 60 gig and older which should i use as primary i heard one slows down the other is it is secondary

"i heard one slows down the other is it is secondary"

Not true, just make sure they are set up as "DMA if available" in dev mgr\ide controllers and all will be well.

Go ahead and use the 80 gig 7200 as primary.

Actually it is true that adding a 5400 RPM drive to an IDE system with a drive thats 7200 RPM will in fact slow the system down in varying degree's, but so will many other devices. i.e. CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, Iomega IDE zip drives, LS120's the list is actually quite large.

Replace the 5400 drive drive with another 7200 RPM drive.

Or get an external USB case for under 100 bucks, and use it for backups or an additional drive.
