I had heard that ICMP is an Ethernet protocol to resolve ethernet probleme.
can some body tell me an URL where i can learn more about it ?

and is there an application that help to trace the ICMPs packets to resolv my Ethernet problems

Thanks ;)

Hi,

ICMP is defined in RFC 792 --> . It is mostly used in the 'ping' command and some implementations of 'traceroute' (linux traceroute defaults to UDP packets; -I flag forces ICMP).

Probably what whoever meant was that, normally, the first thing you do to test connectivity is to 'ping' and address to see if you get a response. Its not universally reliable because it is possible to firewall icmp packets and some sysadmins do just that to remain as invisible as possible from crackers. See --> (some of the commands there are ios commands for cisco routers - its just to give you the general idea)

Hope this helps
