I called bellsouth and had them set up a static ip address. I want to run terminal services so i can log into the network from home with remote desktop and do some work. now what do i need to do?

also what firewall software do you recommend using?

Are you using dial up or broadband. If your using broad band i would recommend purchasing a router (linksys $80 tops). This will give you a much better firewall solution and also allow you to share your internet to more than 1 computer. If its just one computer from home into the network then I would think about using VNC remote software. Its free do a search,

The office network is allready setup with a server and cayman dsl router and a netgear switch. what i need to know is what do i need to do in win2k to get it to recgonize the static ip and then what do i need to do with terminal services to allow a remote login.

If I may take a shot at this. If I understand you right. Bellsouth assigned your cayman dsl router a static ip. DSL router is connected to the netgear switch. So a network diagram would look like this:
internet----dsl----netgear----server

I would recommend setting up a VPN with your router and running your remote desktop over the VPN tunnel to the TS server. Depending if your router will support a VPN or not. If not, you can configure the router to forward port 3389 traffic to the private ip of your TS server.

Make sure terminal services is installed on the server.
Click on start>settings>control panel> add/remove programs icon. Once this program is up click on add/remove windows components. Make sure terminal services is checked. You can verify this by using a networked pc with remote desktop. (just type in plug in the ip)

Hope this helps or at least guides you in the write direction.

I wouldnt run TS over VPN unless your 100% sure your home computer is as secure as the office network. TS should be fine, or you could use the new 128 bit ver of TS if your worried.

VNC I definatly would not recommend over TS as its more of a pain in the butt to use, more difficult to secure than TS, and take over the local session on the machine your connecting too. Use VNC as a backup, but not as a primary way to work.
