Hi

I am trying to run a MS Access database driven asp page from my IIS 5.0 webserver. I have placed the file in the directory and when I put in my http:// address into a browser from another computer in another location I keep getting a http 403 access forbidden error. I am running windows XP and when I run the file in a browser locally everything works fine.
I cannot get it to work from another location e.g by typing
Can anyone give me some assistance on this problem as it is doing my head in.

p.s I tried to connect to a normal html page i have stored in the same directory and that gave the same problem too???
I think there is a fundamental block stopping anyone accessing my computer (the firewall is off by the way!)

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!!!

Cheers

John

John,

First, can you connect to any HTML page that is hosted on this box? If not, I would make sure the service is running and make sure the permissions are correct.
If you can connect to a basic HTML page, then put an ASP page in the same directory and see if you can get to it. If not, check the permissions.
Also, just for Grins, you may want to check the File permissions.
Just a few thoughts... Let us know what ya come up with.

Thanks for replying Ed

Unfortunately i've tried those things but am still having a problem.
The IIS server is definitely running, when you say permissions how and what should they be set to.......because at the moment I cannot access anything from the server??....It seems to forbid access (http 403 error) to anything I put in!!!!
Are there any other settings that could be affecting it?

Hmm..
Permissions Wizard takes care of the security settings within IIS.
As far as the file security, Whatever account the service uses (normally Internet) need to have access to the documents. I normally give Read/Execute perms to Everyone if it's in the public stuff on the website.

Has this install of IIS ever worked? If so, what caused it to stop? Just a few questions that may help solve the problem.

It definatly sounds like a security settings issue...

If neither of these help, check all these places within IIS Manager:

Under "Home Directory"
Make sure the directory is correct
Check these two: Script Source Access and Read

Under "Directory Security"
Go To "Edit" under Anonymous Access and Auth Control
Make sure Anonymous Access is turned on.
Verify the account that is listed for anon access is valid and the password is correct.
Uncheck everything else under "Authenication Methods"

Go To "Edit" under IP Add and Domain Name restrictions
Make Sure "Granted Access" is checked

Hope this helps some.

The IP address and domain name restrictions box is greyed out so I cannot "edit"........any idea how to un-grey it so I can grant access????

not sure about that one. never heard of it before...

Something else to try... Looking in the file, normally under %WinDir%\System32\LogFiles or the event viewer.

i've looked at the log file and i do not see any records for people outside trying to connect to my webserver......all I get is records for when I open the asp page. For some reason I can access the file on the webserver with no probelms at all but nobody outside can access anything whatsoever!!!?????

Have you tried posting the question in Microsoft:Internet Information Server?
