Whenever I open Internet explorer I get the following error message:

"Error in Protocol.CoCreateInstance [0x80004002]

Sometimes I can continue to use ie, but other times it just crashes and trys to send an error report.

I'm running Windows XP SP1a, I.E 6.

I've tried to uninstall ie and reinstall but when I go to windowsupdate.com it now does not scan my pc to check if I need any updates.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It is very possible your IE is corrupt. The easiest way that I can think of to have you reinstall it through windows XP is ....
From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.
You may want to run windows updates after you reboot.
If this does not work you may want to redownload IE6 from the internet.
This is only a suggestion
Good luck

amen1973 Thanks for your post. I have done what you suggested but still no luck still getting this bloody error message. Looks like I will have to rebuild my pc.

Thanks for ur help.

Start, Run, cmd
Type each line and answer the prompt if any:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups.dll

Registered all the dlls listed above successfully but still no joy.

Then I would be concerned about a possible malware infection. Reinsatalling IE is about the only "fix", but after doing so do a malware clean of the system: faq608-4650

"CoCreateInstance() on Internet Explorer..."

Uninstall and reinstall IE 6
