We are going to install a Windows 2003 server to host some shared network files amoungst other tasks. I have several workstations that are using XP home that need to access shared files on the new server (mostly office docs and images. Obviously XP Home cannot join the domain. Which is ok since I don't have a need to introduce group policies and any other AD features. So instead of joining the domain can I just create the users and give the users the appropriate access to the directories then on the workstations create a batch file or VBScript to attach to the drives when the users boot thier computers?

Will this work? Other than no AD features what are possible drawbacks? IS there an easier or better way to do this?

thanks

You can run a 2003 server as part of a workgroup just like XP or anything else. If it suits you it's fine. The main draw back is the lack of enterprise security and control but if you do not need it then there is no real issue.
